Thread 1:
(1/2): In the Trump administration’s orchestrated racist campaign to undermine the right for migrants & refugees to try and claim asylum, the proposed regulations shoot a near fatal arrow in the heart of the rights for people specifically from the Northern Triangle region. #saveasylum
(2/2): This gives {those fleeing brutal gang persecution} effectively no shot at getting their day in court. We are fighting to #saveasylum Link here: https://bit.ly/2Ny8YDV

Thread 2:
(1/2): The Trump Administration's new asylum rules say that Refugees must come to the border with:
All of their documents, & present their case at the border as they turn themselves in to CBP.  #SaveAsylum
(2/2): It is an evil ruse to stop Black & Brown people from seeking safety in the U.S. These rules make it nearly impossible for anyone fleeing violence and
persecution to get asylum. Join us in the fight to #saveasylum Link here: https://bit.ly/2Ny8YDV

Thread 3:

(2/2): No other USCIS Director or DHS official have ever issued regulations so extreme, cruel, racist and wide-ranging. #SaveAsylum Cuccinelli must #resign

Sample post #1:
The Trump administration has unveiled its furthest-reaching plan yet to change asylum law in the U.S., redefining the meaning of “persecution” and raising the bar for refugees seeking protection under the Convention Against Torture, among other changes.

The proposal, first unveiled Wednesday, was swiftly condemned by advocates like the Tahirih Justice Center, which called the proposed regulations “an assault on the fundamental right to seek asylum.”

“If fully implemented, they will gut years of progress in the U.S. to create bridges to safety for so many whose governments could not and would not protect them from severe harm and even death,” said a statement from the nonprofit, which advocates for immigrants escaping gender-based violence.

Sample post #2:
“‘Over the past couple of years, the Trump administration has been slowly chipping away at asylum seekers’ ability to seek refuge in the United States. With the advent of the coronavirus, Donald Trump and Stephen Miller finally had their chance to shut down the border indefinitely, ending asylum as we know it, at least through the 2020 election.

But on Wednesday, they proved that they won’t stop until the border is virtually sealed to asylum seekers in the future—COVID-19 or not. The Department of Homeland Security posted 161 pages of proposed regulations that, according to advocates and attorneys, include virtually everything the White House has wanted to do to gut asylum in the United States.

Before most of us could finish reading the dense, legalistic document, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick already had broken it down on Twitter, calling the “Kafkaesque” new rules a “sick joke.” So I called Reichlin-Melnick, policy counsel at the American Immigration Council, to make sense of what these proposed changes could mean for tens of thousands of people who are seeking refugee here. “The top line here is that the Trump administration is frustrated that it’s been losing in court on the definition of asylum,” he said. “So rather than accept that its definition is wrong, it wants to simply change the rules and declare itself the winner.”’
The proposed changes would create brand new bars for asylum and redefine what asylum means. Essentially, Reichlin-Melnick said, the Trump administration is saying: “If we don’t get you one way, we’re going to get you another way. If we don’t get you a third way, we’ll get you a fourth way. Every single one of these things are overlapping tools to ensure that no one wins asylum.”

Naomi Steinberg, HIAS’ Vice President for Policy and Advocacy noted that, “For the last three years, we have seen the Trump administration dismantle our asylum system. It has been a near constant stream of changes that have rolled back decades of established legal precedent, resulting in the removal of refugee protections that have long been an accepted part of who we are as a country. These new regulations are the equivalent of taking a steamroller and obliterating what remains of the asylum system. They flout any pretense of attempting to adhere to the rule of law and basic tenets of due process.”

There is now a 30-day period during which the public can submit comments in response to the proposed regulations. The administration must review all of the comments before the regulations are finalized. https://bit.ly/30QdsgS

WE ARE FACING ANOTHER BLOW TO ASYLUM, AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.

The Trump administration's newest proposed regulation would gut what is left of our asylum laws. The new laws propose nearly a dozen new bars to asylum which will violate not only international treaties, but our own Constitution. This law would abandon hundreds of thousands of vulnerable families and individuals with nowhere left to turn for safety -- including the more than 300,000 people with affirmative asylum claims currently pending. (More information on the specific changes and what they mean for Friends is below.)

We have until July 15 to submit comments detailing our concerns about this law. The administration is legally obligated to respond to each issue raised in these comments. This process can be lengthy so the rule is not expected to go into effect until the fall at the earliest. With enough comments and public outcry, we hope to delay its effect even longer.

What we need from you and how you can take action:

1-BY JULY 15: Submit a comment based on experiences you’ve had with Friends or based on how wrong we know these new regulations are. See info on New Sanctuary Coalition's website on how to comment. https://www.newsanctuarynyc.org/save_asylum

2-Share this post and information widely with friends, family, community members, and on all social media.

We need thousands of people to get on the government's page and let them know we believe in human rights and dignity.

ew bars to asylum which will violate not only international treaties, but our own Constitution. The 30-day review period is too short, we must request a 60-day time period for this, the norm for comments. We are not immigration lawyers, and it’s impossible for us to be able to understand all of the changes and the impact that these changes will have on asylum seekers, and on the asylum process. Plus we are still living in a pandemic, which adds another layer of complication to the review process.
