Please join us for a training on affirmative asylum to support the New Sanctuary Coalition Pro Se Legal Clinic. (If you're not a lawyer and interested in joining our clinic, please check out our training page and we look forward to meeting you!)
The training will be led by Kristin Pezzuti. About this training:
This training is intended to demystify the asylum process for attorneys of all levels of immigration experience. It will cover:
Brief overview of the elements of a successful asylum claim;
The affirmative versus defensive asylum process;
How affirmative asylum decisions are made by local Asylum Offices; and
Best practices for I-589 and interview preparation, from the perspective of a former asylum officer.
Kristin Pezzuti was an Asylum Officer at the New York Asylum Office from December 2017-April 2019, where she adjudicated over 350
affirmative asylum cases. She is a longtime volunteer at New Sanctuary Coalition and a 2013 graduate of Hofstra Law School. She is currently a Staff Attorney at Safe Passage Project where she represents young people in their removal proceedings.
About the NSC Pro Se Clinic:
The New Sanctuary Coalition believes in empowering our affected communities to understand and lead their own legal cases to the greatest extent possible. The clinic is run by NSC staff and the bulk of the work is done by trained volunteers who work in solidarity with our immigrant Friends.
Every Wednesday, the clinic works with anywhere from 50 to over 150 people seeking immigration help. Our Friends work with hundreds of volunteers to ensure that they are able to assert their legal rights as immigrants. Since its inception in 2014, the Clinic has helped thousands of people file timely asylum claims, change the venue of their deportation hearing, secure representation, and get support from their community.
Volunteer attorneys are an integral part of this community that struggles every day to fight for the right of everyone to live in dignity. Attorneys provide limited legal consultations, review pro se applications, and answer questions to the best of our ability in this ever-changing climate.
